U-joints most likely, when mine were bad, every time I shifted from R to D there would be a terrible CLANG. If you've never replaced them, it's probably about time.

Yup, that's exactly what it does when shifting from R to D and vice versa. I knew I could count on you guys!

so looking into this further, i'm seeing that this is more than likely the slip yoke and that GM offers a nickel plated slip yoke but that's close to $300. ouch. another solution i read about is to drill a small hole into the drive shaft, install a grease fitting and pack it with grease with a grease gun every 6 months or so. apparently, it's a common issue. i'm surprised there aren't more threads on it here.

You don't have to install a grease fitting to grease the slip yoke. Sure, it will make things easier, but it's not hard to pull the drive shaft and grease the slip yoke. I just did mine the other day. Start there and see if it fixes anything.

True true...I wouldn't go that far unless it ends up fixing it and I end up having to do it fairly soon after the first time. I wouldn't mind doing the U joints and the slip yoke but I don't want to throw any more money into this thing. It's starting to feel old and people all around me are getting new Silverados and I'm starting to get new truck envy.

Edited to add:

I'm pretty sure it is the U-joints because I hear the noise coming from the very back so it's probably the ones that go to the dif so that's an easy, cheap attempt at a fix. From all I've looked up, it doesn't cause any sort of problems, but is an annoyance more than anything else.
