In September, as I do before every winter, I detail the car and apply Collinite boat wax to protect it over the harsh NY winters. Anyway, I haven't washed it at all since then (too lazy on weekends and too cold during the week) and want it clean. I hesitiate to take it to a hands free carwash only because who knows that the hell is being applied and perhaps it might end up stripping all the wax I put on. What is a guy to do who wants to keep his truck looking clean?!?!?!?

Nothing wrong with hitting the coin op wash to blast loose all the junk thats on there, but I wouldn't use the brush.

The touchless (chemical wash) systems at gas stations aren't all that good at really cleaning that well.

If it were me I'd use one of the above options to get most of the grime knocked down, then head home, do a secondary light wash, and go from there.

With the coin op you bring a jug of water, soap, glove and bucket. You do it when the place is slow as to not piss anyone off. Thats the only way to go up here in the winter as the hoses and water is long off outside at home.

In the winter I fill up my bucket with warm or hot water from the sink. You can also try wearing latex gloves to keep your hands warm. The combination of these two things will keep your hands from freezing in the 30 mins it takes to wash your car.

Coin wash works great, even if you just use the rinse it will make a big difference in just removing all the crud. I wouldn't worry about anything stripping the wax, besides what do you think all the snow/ice/salt stuff does to it.

I just use a hose to spray all the road gunk off and then hand wash it. I might freeze my balls off, but I'd rather do that than get swirl marks. I also have the convenience of taking it in the garage and waxing it to protect it from the crap and snow a little better. Those snow brushes do bad bad things to the paint. I don't care how much snow is on the car, don't touch the paint with those plastic bristles

The thing I like about those touchless carwashes is that most of them hit the undercarriage. A must if throw salt on the roads!

Actually its been said its best not to wash the underside of your car in the winter as it forces the salt into places it wouldnt go otherwise and then cant get washed out naturally. It does more hidden damage than good. I read it somewhere damned if i can find the artical now lol
