So i was driving today and notice my gas gauge needle vibrate the whole way home. Has anyone experience this problem or does anyone know what could possible be the cause for the needle of the gas gauge to be shacking/vabrating while in idle?

the dampening fluid in the gauge disappears over time and the gauge is fed a pulse signal from the pcm to give a reading. older models were not wire like that yet.

Its a 99 tahoe. and what i notice is that when i insert the key in the ignition and crank it, the gas gauge goes all the way to the right like if it would turn all the way around but then it goes to its position. i dont know if it could be maybe a fuse i need to change for the gauges or maybe the floater of the gas pump. But if it was my gas pump, the check engine light would turn on i figured. just dont want to end up breaking down in the middle of the high way thats why i am questioning this problem. So dont know if someone has had the same problem and found a solution to fix the problem.

that is a gauge or pcm issue. pump failures are not tracked in the obs model. if it suddenly decides to start dropping pressure the pcm could respond with a lean condition. but not really report pressure numbers to pcm. that came in later years.

Had the same problem and it is the gauge itself......replaced with a used gauge cluster (Denali 120 mph) and its fixed.
