New cluster mileage question

Hey everybody, was looking at a 2001 yukon denali at a dealership and it actually had a escalade cluster in it. What im wondering is the odometer had 165k on it. So is that the mileage from the previous vehicle, or is the that the mileage of the truck itself?

The mileage is stored in the cluster. So, you really don't know 100% unless there is a sticker on the back of the cluster saying so. People can get a cluster with lower mileage off eBay and slap it in. However, some people will go through the correct procedure and have the new cluster programmed with their mileage in it.

You can have a dealer pull the actual mileage out of the abs module. It's also stored there but won't transfer to the cluster

Will the dealer provide a CarFax? It's usually pretty good at showing mileage discrepancies.

Thanks for all the help guys. The dealership is a real little used dealership and they have had this 01 denali for sale for like 2 months now and they're only asking 3800. Figured id check it out. I will definitly get the carfax but it seems to me like this thing is sketchy. They told me they had put a new hood and fender on so it may possibly have a rebuilt title or something too. Thanks again everyone
