Hey everyone - picked up a 2017 Yukon Denali XL this evening for my wife - replacing her Honda Odyssey. Iridium Metallic and the 22" 5 spoke machine finish with high gloss black wheels. We absolutely love everything about it inside and out with the exception of one thing. There is zero visibility out the rear view mirror when the screen is down on the rear seat entertainment system. I am completely baffled by how the engineers could have ignored this obvious design flaw (and safety issue). And more aggravated with myself that I didn't notice this during the test drive, but I didn't even think about pulling down the screen. Part of me thinks that I am overlooking something in relation to way to avoid this issue (beyond the obvious of not pulling down the screen!).

Curious what other owners have done about this and if there is some type of workaround. Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks in advance!

Jeremy

It isn't really a design flaw IMO. We've had several vehicles with overhead DVD players and they all block the rear view mirror when down. Headrest monitors would help in that situation but then the monitors get washed out by the sunshine coming through the windows. Pick the lesser of 2 evils. First world problems either way.

2013 Suburban set up the same way. No rear visibility with the screen down either.

Alternative solution - get headrest monitors or just roll with iPads and no overhead screen. I realize that does not solve the obvious issue, but just sharing ideas.

First world problems indeed. lol on point.

Get used to driving with side mirrors only! I just got a 2017 in Oct and figured this out like you. I don't like it when the screens are down at all but am living with it. We have an Odyssey too and it does not have this issue. My old Sequoia had only partial blockage. The Yukon is basically total blockage.

Rear view camera into an LCD integrated into the mirror would be nice. Need to wait until hyundais have it as standard. 5 years later GMC will have it on the Denali!

Yes, when down in Odyssey u still have full line of sight. They should have just mounted them in headrests. I'm a mirror driver - constantly looking in rear view and side mirrors. This is very aggravating.

There actually is an option for a DVD headrest system instead of overhead if you go to build one on the website. I am not sure how many come from the factory like that without special order. I have only seen the overhead one in person.

I thought we can buy that aftermarket unit to unlock or add a few things. Similar to what I had on my 07. Pioneer Z1 when ever I had a big cargo inside. I could use my rear view camera.

Yep, it's a bit annoying but I've learned to rely on just the side mirrors while the kiddo is watching a movie. Not ideal but it's not a show stopper IMO.
