I was looking to buy a third car for the family and a winter car for a while (I live in a suburb of Boston) and ended up buying a 2000 Tahoe with 160,000 miles for $2500 from a friend. He did a lot of work to the front end and repainted it since he owns a body shop. I took it to a mechanic and it needed about $2300 of work to be perfect. I've also put in two new front seats and done some deep cleaning. My goal is to have this be a reliable car and possibly use it for some family road trips. My only concern is the age. Does anyone use their older tahoe or suburban for road trips? Any tips besides taking it to a mechanic?

Thanks

Age shouldn't be a problem. Mine is an 02 with 200+ miles and we take it to Florida every year. No worries, just make sure everything is good with the belts and fluids.

Has the transmission been replaced? Do you know the service history of the transmission? If not, drain/drop the pan, change the filter, reinstall the pan, and then put 3 quarts down your dipstick tube.

DO NOT DO A FLUSH AT A DEALER OR JIFFY LUBE. IT LIKELY WILL DESTROY THE TRANSMISSION.

The transmissions and fuel pumps are often the weak spots on these trucks, but the motors are pretty dang bulletproof.

My 2000 Tahoe has 259k and still running strong. Since 170k, I've put in new AC, heater core, brakes, alt and just did the trans at 250k. Overall I think it's been a great ride.
