Hello to all...

We are the new owners of a 2002 Yukon XL, 1500, 4WD. We purchased it last week from a man in Houston , TX. It is a well used and well maintained one owner vehicle with 162K. The appears the original owner did a good job of providing whatever care and scheduled maintenance the Yukon needed. I am still going through all the receipts for "everything" he ever purchased for it.

In the past 12 months, he had the tranny and rear end fluids changed, new belt and hoses, new rotors, calipers & pads, new fuel pump, etc, etc. The oil was changed 4 months ago and had 2K on it. Prior to taking delivery, he had the oil/filter changed and everything inspected. I thought that was very nice of him.

Our plan was to tow our Prius back home to Mobile, AL (550 miles), but during conversation realized we had forgotten to bring our drawbar with us. The seller took his off his new truck and put it on the Yukon. ...really nice guy. We rented a U-haul tow dolly, loaded the Prius and began a 60 MPH trip back home. We averaged 15.1 MPG pulling the Prius and fighting a very strong head & cross wind.

The interior is well used with a lot of wear on the the seat bottoms. I will have to replace the drivers seat cover and foam (it sounds like most folks are using the Seat-Shop from eBay) and I will make some repairs to the other seat covers as needed. The exterior paint looks good from 10' but up close you can see the upper half is very scratched. He said he believes it was caused by the car wash flappers being contaminated with some type of debris...he ran it through the car wash 2x a week.

The engine is clean and dry, no leaks or seeps noted. He said he thought the rear seal was leaking a few months ago...but the mechanic found some type of o-ring ????at the rear of the engine that was leaking and replaced it. The mechanic charged him $5 for the ring and labor... I'm sure some of you will know what it was.

The steering feels good but has some play in the wheel. I will be looking at the front end parts for wear and I'm hoping that just a minor adjustment of the steering box will tighten things up.

I do have two obvious issues that I need some guidance on and I will post it here until I have searched it well; The Comp/Temp display on the rear view mirror is very dim (lights on/off, instrument lights, up/down, day or night) and nothing changes it. At night it is easy to see, but almost impossible during the day. The other issue is the outside mirror control switch. I get left/right on both mirrors (it takes a little wiggling of the switch to make it work), but no up/down activation at all. Since the problem is bilateral and the switch function is a bit sketchy, I am hoping I can remove and clean the switch, if not, I will replace it. Any suggestions regarding these two issues, or other things I should be looking at would be sincerely appreciated.

My thanks to all for a great forum. I'm glad I found it and I am also grateful to be a part of it. Thanks!

Thanks guys...appreciate the welcome. I posted a separate thread for the comp/temp lighting issue. I also removed the mirror control switch (for the outside mirrors) and took it apart. It was rather gunked up. After a good cleaning and a gentle polishing of the contacts with a dollar bill...everything is working fine. As an FYI...folding money that is still in pretty good shape make an excellent polishing cloth for delicate parts. Even eyeglasses...just make sure the bill is clean!
