Autotrac was GM's name for the Fulltime AWD or Auto 4WD selectable pushbutton transfer cases. If all you have is the pushbutton that say 2HI, 4HI or 4LO, then you DO NOT have autotrac, and the autotrac transfercase and driveshafts are different than the non autotrac. Autotrac pushbuttons have an additional button saying AUTO 4WD. Hope this helps!

All it does when you put it in auto is it engages the transfer case and partially engages the hubs. When it senses the rear tires slipping more than a 1/4 turn it fully engages the hubs. Just some insight to how it works..

Andy for your information, these truck DO NOT have any auto locking hubs, they have CV joints that are splined INSIDE a hub/bearing assembly. The front axle is always engaged by the four wheel drive actuator found in the axle tube, and is disengaged only in 2HI position to unlock tires to the axle. Second, the way the Autotrac 4WD system works is with a electronic viscous coupling clutches inside the transfer case, operated by a motor. When rear wheel slippage is detected it starts applying the coupling to gradually increase torque to the front diff to match rear wheel torque. This is in a nutshell, but throttle angle and vehicle speed are also a contributing factor in applying torque to the front tires. So please dont give out the wrong info to someone who doesnt know, as this will confuse them even more!

Have fun!

When I say it engages the hubs I am talking about the the engagement actuator that pushes the shift fork that intern moves the collar over both splined shafts within the front differential. I only said it engages the hubs because it is easier to explain than that whole mess.. and much shorter. I have torn apart and rebuilt the front diff in mine. I know because I had to fix this little number: FILE0081resized.jpg
And as far as the autotrac goes.. When I engage mine the actuator extends 1/2 way and when the rear tires start spinning it fully extends (was up on jack stands with the actuator out). Maybe they changed it for 2000, but I doubt it. And thats how I know what I'm talking about.
