While driving today I heard this noise coming from somewhere in the dash. i seems like something rolling back and forth as I hit the brake and gas. I started taking things apart under the dash to find that it seems to be coming from inside of the ducting on the very bottom a little left of the glove box.

I see no access to this area. Does anyone know of any access to here. I am not sure what is inside of there. All of the vents still function and switch properly. The noise does go away when I turn the fan up all the way. Noise is still there on low/medium settings. I am thinking the air from the fan is pushing whatever this object is up against something and preventing it from moving.

I am assuming taking the ducting down is a terrible task. I thought about putting a magnet on a string and hoping to catch it if its magnetic.

trying to get an inspection camera from a friend to see if i can see in there.

any help?

If it’s the main ducting you have to remove the console if you have one, and then the dash. It’s not a small job but it’s not too bad technically wise, just a ton of 7mm screws. You’re looking at a few hours work. Are you thinking something fell in the ducting from above?

It may have happened when I repaired the cracked dash... I really dont wanna take all that apart again.. I took out the pass airbag and stereo console. checked all around. seems to be coming from inside of the vent still. Used a small inspection camera and cannot see anything moving. I put a magnet down there on a string with no luck (not even sure the object is magnetic).

There seems to be some type of cover with bolts on it above the heater core. I'm going to see if thats actually removable or not. other than that, I may just have to live with this terrible noise.

It appears to make the noise less when the fan is turned higher, which is why I think its inside of the vent.

You’ll probably have to take the dash back out to get to that ducting, that's the only way I can think of. I did a complete dash swap in my 08 Silverado from an LT to a LTZ and I swapped those ducts because they were different as well as the main supporting structure behind them. If you dropped something in them, I don’t see any other way.
