I really,really didn't want to do it.

I wanted to keep the 2003 Yukon neat, clean and classy.I still do.But twice this week I found myself driving with a handful of 2x4s inside while I tried to balance the stack to keep it off the passenger seat headrest,if you can picture that,.I thought I wouldn't give in and do that stuff, but it was just way convenient to do it on the way to a jobsite.

I do construction work,so that won't be the last time.I have other trucks,so that is not an issue, but if it is a matter of carrying a couple of 2x4s and an 8 foot step ladder it would be great to do it.

So,I guess I am looking for a roof rack.I have a stock one with no cross pieces.I guess I am looking for something that is a little more classy than off-roadish,not a basket. And something on the sides so something can't really just slide off the side. And a way to hold things down without having to climb all over the truck.

I did some brief googling, but the best suggestions are always right here.:peace:

A yuk one not really a work vehicle... IMO just get old rack or baskets its still not gonna be something you like but atleast you can haul stuff to work or get a small utility trailer and haul stuff on the trailer. I've hauled 2x4s in the hoe but its sketchy being that m 2dr is not as long as a 4dr so I just use my trailer or my basket or just the ranger which is better for work since its a truck and can beat to hell and doesn't use as much gas

I wouldn't call the Yukon a work truck,I have a couple of them. But if having a roof rack can allow me to pick up a few 2x4s and a step ladder,it can save me an extra trip back with another truck and a lot of time.

Another note,I accidentally posted this in the 2007+ forum, but I know the racks 2000 and up are interchangeable, and maybe I will get some high-class suggestions here.

The thing I see with a lot of factory crosspieces, and since my 2003 didn't have them when I bought it,so not sure about factory Yukon,is that many have an arch to them and are thin.I want something straight and sturdy.

I looked at a couple of NBS and NNBS roof racks and it looks like the standard cross piece has an arc to it,not sure what the intention of that is.

Saw a Z71 and it looks like the cross pieces are straight, and a little heftierand they mount to the side of the rack, rather than the top.

Are the cross pieces the same on NBS and NNBS?

I have an 04 and there is a slight arch but it does not effect things. As for sturdy. You don't need to worry about that. Each football game I pile around 400# of stuff on my roof and for the past 4 years I have yet to have an issue.

Get the stock cross bars and save your $$ for something important like hookers n blow.

The stock rack will serve you well.

Good to know that strength is not an issue.I am just picturing those arched cross pieces with something large and flat like a sheet of plywood, and how something like that would rock around on that. And the Z71 roof rack seems to have more roof to cross piece clearance, that would help with not screwing up the roof when lashing things down.

However, your point about the hookers and the blow is very, very wise.Sometimes you can get all caught up in these little details and lose sight of what is really important.
