I have a 1994 GMC Yukon with a 5.7L which has 460K Km's and my oil pressure is usually good, but lately its been low (not everyday though), even when you bring the revs up it goes down slightly. I am planning a rebuild in the summer so if its worn bearings I will probably just throw a set of bearings and a high volume pump at it, just to get me by till then.

I am wondering if there is any common problems with oil pressure senders or gauges that might cause false low oil pressure readings on my gauge.

I have not just put a second gauge in to confirm what shows up on my dash yet, just wondering what you guys have experienced :)

Ok from what i have had is my 94 5.7 did that and it turned out to be worn out bearings and worn crank shaft. No you cant just drop in stufr without getting it overhauled first. No mechanic will do that but i had to get it completely overhauled and i dont think the gauges make false statments because if its reading then its not not working. It cost me 1300 for the overhaul but more likely mor for you up to about 2000ish

Thanks for the reply. So the gauge isn't likely to be giving me a false reading, if it's working then. I will throw a gauge on it at work and deco firm :)

A high volume pump with no oiling system mods and stock pan is a bad idea. There is nothing wrong with a stock pump for a mild block Chevy.

Sorry but thats contraditory to what I have been informed. Have you had any experience with a high volume pump that resulted in catastrophic failure? Everything that I have read aswell as an engine rebuilding/performance shop said high volume, standard pressure is supposed to be ok in a SBC because of where the oil is directed. The higher volume is only about 15-20% more than a standard pump and won't suck the sump dry.

Yes I have. Infact there was a guy here Ray that had some PSI issues under breaking after a rebuild with a high volume pump ...
