I used to always change the oil myself because it was cheaper and I didn't want to bother taking it in. I used Penzoil because my dad always did and always changed it when the change oil light came on. The last 2 or 3 times I let the dealer do it because it was $40 and they check everything out and I think they used synthetic blend according to the sticker. Anyways, I see most people seem to recommend synthetic oil now and seeing that Mobil 1 is under $25 and the dealer raised the price, I am probably better off going that route. It is at 140,000 now and has never appeared to burn any oil. Is this a good way to go? And is the high mileage synthetic worthwhile or just the regular synthetic?

I use Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage 5W-30 Synthetic with a Mobil 1 filter. I just did a change this weekend and it was $23 for the 5-qt jug, $6 for the extra quart, and $9 for the filter. With tax it came out right at $40 for the supplies.

It's all about preference. @ 199k, and original 5.7, Pennzoil 5w 30 high mileage with Fram ultra guard with NO FAILURES. JMHO and good luck. PS, stay away from Dealers.

Same! 146K on original 5.3L 2004, Castrol GTX 5W-30 with a Fram filter, no issues, fingers crossed! Have always been told once you go high mileage oil you cannot go back because it is designed to expand the rubber seals in the motor! Just my two cents worth.

I was a penzoil guy with Fram for a long time. I have now gone Mobil 1 5w30 high mileage synthetic and Mobil 1 filter. My oil is cleaner longer with the Mobil 1. I will stick with this setup.

Ok thanks guys. Maybe I'll just go with regular synthetic instead of high mileage synthetic in case I get it changed somewhere in the future and they don't use high mileage.

Yeah just shop around a bit and you can pick up whatever synthetic you want for just a few bucks more than dino. I recently went to the Pennz Ultra Platinum synthetic and ordered online for local pickup at Walmart. You can get it for less than $30 for a 5 qt jug. Just remember, the most important thing about oil...is keeping it changed :)
