Hey guys, new to the forum and tried a search but couldnt come up with anything. So here's my ?.....

I am wanting to put an aftermarket radio in my denali truck i just purchased. IT's a 2000. The previous owner had a stereo in the truck but removed it and put the factory radio back in. However, it's missing the wire harness for onstar. I'm not interested in using onstar so I could care less if its there. But I went to Best buy to have them install my radio and they told me I had to have this wire harness! They said if I dont it could cause deployment of my air bags and they will not install it without that harness. Is this true or are they just trying to sell me more shit I dont need? I find it hard to believe that harness controls the air bags or could cause them to deploy. Anyway I didnt end up doing it cause I didnt want to pay an extra $130 dollars for this harness when I already had a regualr harness (without onstar) and a dash kit I had bought on ebay way cheaper then they charge. Well any insight would help guys. Thanks in advance.

does the factory radio have a built in amp or something? and also since it seems that everything is already not in use( bose system, onstar, etc.) you could just direct wire your speakers to your aftermarket radio, this will probably eliminate all harnesses

That's strange. I know there are two harness available. 1. for if you add an aftermarket radio and want to keep your Onstar. 2. If you add an aftermarket radio and don't care about loosing your onstar. I wasn't aware it had anything to do with airbags at all. But it won't surprise me since all this sheit is inter-related with some other system. Oh the joy of modern tech

Best Buy is full of crap. I have istalled radios for many years and you do not need that expensive harness. Go with what you have and you will be fine.
