Is there any need to run It in the defenders or will p work just fine?
18" tires.

Don't want to sacrifice the ride quality if I can help it.

There is no need to run LT. Many do and have no complaints. As long as the defender in question that is "P" rated is capable of carrying the same weight ratings as are currently printed on the driver door jamb sticker, you're fine.

To me personally, there is a noticeable difference when running a E load rated LT tire on a Tahoe/Yukon or 1500 suburban. I can feel a stiffer ride with the E rated tires that I've run on 1500 pickups and tahoes in the past. To some it is not objectionable, but personally I'd prefer to keep a tire that is similar in load rating to what came on the vehicle, to keep as much of the ride quality intact as possible.
