I have a 2015 Chevy tahoe. The airbag recall work has already been completed. Occasionally the service airbag light will come on. We took it to the dealership and they told me that the passenger airbag sensor needs to be replaced. $1100.00 My question is. Is this a dealer only part/repair?
I would say yes (although a body shop could also make the repair). The issue is one of safety and hence, liability. If you make this a DIY project and a passenger gets hurt because something went wrong, all eyes will be on you. If the dealer or a reputable shop perform the work, then you have someone with deep pockets to go against or draw into the suit.
The other issue is that airbags are volatile in that they can go off if you do something wrong during the install. To me, it’s just not worth it as a DIY project.
As an aside, if you are having an airbag problem, please report it on safercar.gov so that NHTSA can take a look at your complaint. Airbags should not go bad after three years.
Just my 2 cents.
