Hi, I'm looking for input from someone who has added wiring through the factory firewall grommet.

Short story is I want to add an Spod for aux lighting and distro point for my ham radio, etc. I was looking at where to pass the wiring through the firewall on my 2016 Tahoe LT Z71 and see a large rubber grommet/gasket with the factory wiring going to BCMs. Has anyone passed wiring through that, if so how did you handle not destroying the factory grommet.

Is there another existing port or wiring route that anyone has used and found it to be an easier way?

Thanks
-Tony

I just poke a hole in the rubber between the OEM wire bundle and the edge using an awl or some similar. You want a tight round puncture, NOT a slit that will tear and spread. Feed the new stuff through the puncture.

Because I’m into overkill I usually apply some silicone caulk to both sides of the puncture when I’m done.

Oh that’s easy. First buy a PPV where the decommissioning guy savages all the extra wiring. Then reuse the empty 1” grommet. It’s amazing how much will eventually get passed through it.

I spent hours last night searching for the perfect spot to get through the firewall. I have decided it will be on the passenger side where the extra battery mount is. pics coming soon.

For thethirdtwin, I found a grommet in the passenger side floor to go through for my ham radio power cable. it’s about a 1” plug.
