New member here with a new-to-me 97 Yukon. Bought it off Craigslist, good body, 9 month old tranny, very good engine..... I want to clean up the underside this spring and was looking at using POR 15 rust preventive paint. Has anyone used this stuff before? Any and all thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

from summit: Call on POR-15 to restore your car with a rock-hard, non-porous finish that won't chip, crack, or peel and prevents recurring rust by sealing your metal against exposure to moisture. The high-tech, high performance, rust-preventive coating designed for direct application on rusted metal surfaces not only covers the existing rust, it also prevents the reoccurrence of rust. Available in clear, gray, silver, and black, these non-porous POR-15 rust preventive paints are ideal for a quick improvement.

You can apply it directly over rust and it'll stop it from getting worse. What I did, though, was take a grinder with a sanding disc and knock off most of the rust, apply some "Metal Ready" (another Por15 product), then apply the Por15 over that. When done like that the Por15 will try extremely smooth :waytogo:

Check around eastwood sells a rust encapsulator that is just like POR-15, only cheaper. Whatever you do buy small cans. Once it has been opened it has be used or it will get rock hard. I have used it on my '70 Nova subframe. it looks great and painted well. Just make sure you paint over it, it's not UV resistant.

If you seal the leftovers up good and put it in the fridge you can make sure that the leftovers won't go bad :waytogo:

Whatever you do, don't get it on your clothes or skin. Be sure to use disposable gloves. I got some on my hands and couldn't get it off for over a week.

good stuff. On the cheap Rustolium works too. I opted to brush paint it on mine and it came out great but do clean the frame first.

I used a wire brush to knock off the heavy stuff then cleaned it with a dish soap and stiff bristle brush, rinse that and allow to dry. Then paint away.

Thanks for the reply's guys...I've heard alot of great things about this stuff and wanted some "hands on" info. Cold as a witch's *** up here in new england right now so i'm waiting till the spring to attack the underbelly of the 'kon. I know a guy who restores old farm equipment who swears by this stuff....I'll be buying some in april.
