ok so changed my plugs except for #8 for now. #1 had resistance going in no matter how many times i tried it so i just got it in as far as i could. i turned it until it wouldnt turn any further, visually it doesnt loook like its going in as deep as the other plugs on that side. I dont know if that plug just sticks out further or if i need to get it rethreaded. it doesnt look crooked and doesnt wiggle at all. showuld #1 be able to be tapped with the head installed since its in an open space?

I would try and get that cylinder @ top dead center for less change of any thread material winding up in the cylinder. After it's done, I would take a vacuum hose and attach a small hose to it and suck that spark plug hole out really good. I would feel safe doing this if it were my vehicle. JMHO and good luck.

ok, can this be done with the head in place for #1?

Yes, and be thankful it's on #1! I concur with David on vacuuming out the cylinder after you complete your work, before you screw in the spark plug. Lots of people say you can just use a bunch of grease on the tap and the shavings will stick. This is true, but I wouldn't trust that ALL the shavings will stick. It's too quick and easy to slip a small hose (small enough to fit easily through the spark plug hole and maneuver around) inside of a shop vac hose, stuff rags around it and wrap a layer of tape around it to seal. Your shop vac will sound like it's stopped up cuz it actually pretty much is. So, vacuum it out as quickly as possible so you don't burn up your shop vac. Shouldn't take any more than about 30 seconds. You may have to put the piston at the bottom of the cylinder cuz the hose probably won't bend sharply enough through the spark plug hole.
