Potential danger: side view mirror help!

All, I could really use some help here.

All of a sudden, my side view mirror (the driver's side) has developed a mind of its own. I had the curb-side assist (park tilt) enabled for just the driver's side mirror. While I was driving home, I went to look at the mirror to see behind me, and saw that it was tilted way up to the top left.

No biggie I thought; maybe I did something wrong. I adjusted it back properly and drove on my way.

When I arrived home, I put the truck in reverse to back into my driveway, which is VERY narrow, has a power company pole on one side and a stone wall on the other.

I almost RAN right into the stone wall because the mirror went way down to the bottom right, so much so that I could see nothing but the side of the truck. Luckily the parking assist saved my hide. That's when I found out there was a problem.

The parking tilt is supposed to go straight down, enough so you could see the curb, and then right back up when put into park/drive. It exhibits all kinds of random behavior, so badly that I disabled the parking tilt in the DIC. It also exhibits this behavior when I unlock with my remote.

Here's what I tried.

1. Disabling/re-enabling in DIC.
2. Checking the power connections in the mirror.
3. Disconnecting the battery completely from the truck for 15 minutes, then reconnecting.
4. Putting the truck in reverse, setting the mirror to my preferred height, then putting the truck in park/drive.

I don't know what could possibly be causing this because when I press the 1/2 on the door (the memorized recall feature), the mirror moves slightly every time I press it, and sometimes moves randomly around. The mirror motor even keeps spinning when it reaches the edge of housing instead of stopping like it's supposed to.

Any ideas what's going on here? This is potentially very dangerous; if it happens randomly like this, I can see this becoming a major issue.

Sounds like the gears are stripped in the mirror motors.

If mechanically the mirrors check out alright, then you may need the module reflashed or the BCM replaced.

A Tech2 can read any internal codes and is what the technicians at the dealership will use to reflash the module and work on the BCM. Everyone should one of these as they save precious time and money.

To add on to swathdiver, I had a similar problem in that mine would drop to show the curb and not reliably return to home position. I used my Tech 2 to reprogram the Driver Door Switch with this calibration: DDS - 20778198 - Resolves mirror reverse tilt issue for DZM - CVN: 000018F8

Has worked as intended since.

It's definitely not the mirror gears. It works perfectly if used manually. Someone also said it might be the switches in the door got corroded or got water on them. I'm not so sure that's the case, because the steering wheel tilt is acting up as well. Basically anything that requires memory recall: the seat position, steering wheel tilt, and driver's side mirror position. They are all acting wonky.

So I think I'll need to go out and get a Tech 2. Any recommendations on which I should get? And @sk1dm4rk, will that calibration work for my vehicle even though it's a Yukon instead of a Cadillac? I would think so, as they're basically all the same.

I have found that replacing the battery in two different GM vehicles has fixed the problems you have. I suspect the batteries had internal bad connections. Even though these batteries load tested ok, the trucks didn't like something about them, causing intermittent problems with mirrors, driver's seat, transmission shifting, A/C controls.

Go to the DDS section and see if there is a calibration for your truck.

I don't believe that the same seller I bought from has any more. At least not the last time I looked on aliexpress.

My truck has dual batteries. One of which is new (a year old).

You could try disconnecting just one battery at a time and that would prove if there is a battery issue. Also check your frame and engine grounds and the grounds inside the cab for corrosion. I think there are some by the e-brake behind the plastic panel, could also be some on the passenger side.

I would also look for a wire harness that has rubbed through the insulation on the driver's side. There are metal supports in the dash with some rough edges that cause HVAC problems, maybe there are others that can cause the problems you are having.

I have noticed that GM harnesses are often on the short side, not a good situation when routing around metal braces, etc.

How about the harnesses under the driver's seat?
