Power Side Steps

In searching for a used Suburban/XL, I am wondering if I should avoid models with the power retractable side steps. I understand they are prone to having problems.

Does anyone know if they can be easily removed and replaced with traditional side steps?

I have power running boards on my burban and live in the upper midwest

YES - on rare occasions they get a build up of ice/snow and will become inop, but I wash my vehicle often and found Teflon spray to hold up best to the elements
for those times when they are giving you grief, there is a button on the console to lock them out (up or out).

25k miles of flawless performance on mine. My favorite add on. Look great and work perfectly.

40k+ miles and not an issue with mine. Also had it on 3 other GM suvs and not a single issue. This should be the last thing to be worried about when shopping for one of these used.

The Burb I am looking at today has power steps installed. Are the power steps able to be removed and replaced with stationary running boards?

why on earth would you want the coolest feature (and a rock solid one at that) of a suburban to be removed?

That was the only option I did not get even though I really wanted them, they are really nice. I did some homework for my area only and found out that dealerships here in the snowbelt have a higher incident reported to them for these not to work due to ice damming and snow pack. That is not to say that in other areas they would be the same just the area in Southern Georgian Bay where I live.

I'm in a snowbelt. We get well over 150" of snow a year. Once or twice, during a blizzard, my steps may do a brief stutter when extending/retracting. I'll take a 1/2 second stutter over having an immovable snow/slush/ice collection shelf bolted to the side of my car. Stepping out onto a non snow covered step is great.

Why not try them first before getting rid on them and see how they work out for you, then decide if you want to get rid of them. I have read of others removing them with no issues.
