I have a very simple bluetooth receiver for my truck. It's powered by a cigarette lighter port and sends the audio through an aux input via a PAC device into the XM radio system.
I've always had an engine whine through the radio if I power my phone via the cigarette lighter port at the same time I was plugged into the aux input. I greatly reduced the whine by running a ground wire between the cig lighter ground and the radio chassis. If I wanted to eliminate the whine completely I'd unplug the power to the phone.
Now this new bluetooth device is plugged in continuously to provide power to it. This means the whine is always present, although faint. Another peeve is that the power is constantly on to the device since the cig lighter is always on. This is a pain because it forces me to power cycle the things to re-pair to my phone.
My solution is to install a power filter. I want to connect it exclusively to the bluetooth unit so it will have a low draw, but I only want it on when the radio is on. This would be great to get it to stay on even when the ignition is off and I open the door. But I'd need a power antenna lead or something to do that.
The filter is in the mail (ebay purchase) and would like some advice on how to power this thing right. Any ideas?
