My wife was complaining about the steering on her 2001 Yukon XL. She said it was acting "weird" but she wasn't sure what was happening but it wasn't happening very often. I drove it but I didn't find anything. I looked underneath and saw several ball joints had broken or cracking boots. I replaced all steering parts after the steering box. I also replaced the upper control arms and their ball joints. I then had it aligned. I still didn't see any problems when I drove to and from the shop for the alignment. This afternoon, My wife and I ran some errands and she said it was still acting weird. This time I watched what was happening when it happened. When the wheels are turned fairly far in either direction, there is a short release of steering wheel pressure. It is like the resistance to turning the steering wheel suddenly stops for a fraction of a second and resumes again. It happens in both directions and every time we do a hard turn. I assume that this issue is the same one my wife saw before I rebuilt the front end. My wife says it probably is but isn't 100% sure. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be? I'm pretty sure it is power steering related. I'm leaning toward a bad steering box. I did check the fluid level and it is fine.
I had the power steering pump replaced a year or two ago but I don't think the steering box was replaced. It didn't look that new when I was working on the pitman arm yesterday. I also replace the sway bar bushings and links with poly a couple weeks ago.
