I'm thinking about getting a tuner and other upgrades to increase the power but I didn't know if I needed to do anything to the transmission first before I add power, it's an automatic transmission. For diesel trucks I know you need to mess with the transmission first but I didn't know if it was the same way with a Tahoe

You dont need to mess with the transmission on either unless your planning on big upgrades that will add generous jump in power. Most handheld tuner will firm up and or adjust shift points based on the tune you choose. However unless your transmission has a bunch of miles on it already having a shift kit put in will make any performance gains easier on the trans and make the gains more noticeable. If you have a bunch of miles on the trans already have the trans analyzed by a trans shop before making any decisions on a shift kit.

The Trans has 225k miles on it, so I probably should have it looked at

Well basic bolt ons and probably a tune wont hurt dont have a shift kit or any trans work done without having its condition checked first.
