I accidently pressed my start/stop button when my Tahoe was in drive while pulling into the driveway. The engine cut off and displayed shift into park. Shouldn't there be a safety feature that doesn't allow the engine to be cut off until the Tahoe is in park?

It's the same thing as if you were to accidentally turn the key off in another car... it was just shut off as well.

Gotta say I've owned 15+ vehicles with push button starts over the years and not once have I "accidentally" hit the start button while driving.

not really...I will say I've owned many "push button start" vehicles and they all would not cut power unless in park. Current grand cherokee will not shut off unless in park. haven't tested the yukon but I'm surprise that it does from a safety standpoint.

There were a number of Toyota owners that died because they couldn't kill the engine with the Start/Stop button when they experienced unintended acceleration. I would rather have my truck shut off when I accidently hit the button than not be able to kill it if I really needed to.

I believe they all "kill" the engine. The difference is some push-to-start buttons require a three second hold in order to shut of the engine. This is what really hurt those who had unintended acceleration...and subsequent accidents. If you're not familiar with how your specific push-to-start equipped vehicle functions, you could be in serious trouble during an emergency.

Now you know how it works in your Tahoe...just like a key. Turn the key, engine shuts off. Push the button, engine shuts off. No safety concerns once you know...just don't push the button.
