Radar Direct Wire

Okay, so I have a Passport 9500x and I wanted to wire it so that I can turn it on with the button on my reading light. I've seen it done on my uncle's BMW M5, but I know that the wiring may be different and more powerful for a BMW. I wired it in (as shown) but it didn't seem to work. any ideas? a friend said that it may not be a 12v power source, but I'd still like to use that button as the switch, is there a 12v nearby that I can tie into? thanks!

well orange is positive and black negate. is there a fuse in that inline holder? do the lights work? it is 12volt. ohms test the switch for proper function.

There is a fuse in there, made sure it wasnt broken already.
And the light on the right worked, i never plugged in the light on the left though. You've given me hope! Im gonna continue screwing with it!
