Hey all, Newbie as you can see...I have a 99 Suburban 1500. Ive been hearing a whirring sound when I accelerate and I have seen threads about the differential and gear ration already. I have BOTH the GT4 and the G80 code on the lable in my glove box so what does that mean? just wanted to get consise clarification when I start looking for parts

its the bearings inside the axle. We just did my moms cadillac escalade. and my grandparents jimmy. and im getting ready to do my 2door yukon now. the bearings inside the axle will start to expand and then they make a whirring sound almost like a whistle. it doesnt have anything to do with the g80 or the gt4. Hope that helps.

I also vote bearings. You have 3.73 gears with a facotry limited slip is what the codes mean. If you are rebuilding teh rear axle you may want to look into getting rid of the G80 unit for a trutrac is money allows. google g80 sometime and that should scare you enough

GT4 -- AXLE REAR, 3.73 RATIO
GT5 -- AXLE REAR, 4.10 RATIO
GU4 -- AXLE REAR, 3.08 RATIO
GU5 -- AXLE REAR, 3.23 RATIO
GU6 -- AXLE REAR, 3.42 RATIO
G80 -- AXLE REAR, locking differential (has many names, none being good but that brings up a whole other discussion)

Bearings...cool thanks. Is it a perticular bearing(s) I should look for or just a bearing kit? Around how much do you think thats gonna cost for labor?

Another vote for bearings (and yes you just need a bearing kit for the 8.5/8.6 rear). You might also need to replace the axles themselves if the bearings have eaten into them (mine did, unfortunately).

Though you don't have to replace it, while you have the internals out, now's as good a time as any to replace the G80 with a better, stronger differential option (I recently had a Detroit/Eaton Truetrac installed when the bearings and axles had to be replaced on my Tahoe).
