Hello

I took my rear differential fill plug off to check the levels and when I did I heard something fall inside. So I took the case off and it was the fill plug bolt. I don't understand how I am supposed to refill it and put the plug back on after. Can someone please help?
Its a 98 gmc yukon 4x4 5.7l

I found a fill plug on the Back passenger side of the differential but I tried everything And can't seem to get th3 plug off. Is there any other methods that people use to fill them up when There plugs are stuck.

The fill plug just threads into the case, but they can be hard to remove if there's rust or dirt and gunk on it. Spray some penetrating oil on it and let it soak for a bit.

I'm not sure what the bolt is that you found in the differential housing. There shouldn't be a nut on the fill plug. Whatever you found, it shouldn't be rolling around in there.

It was my refill plug on the differential cover. On the inside of the cover It has a bolt and a plastic washer that keeps the plug on. But Most of the covers I have seen have the bolt screw directly onto the cover.

i suppose its possible the weld broke on the bung. In either case, you have to pull your cover. and likely get a replacement.
I wouldnt even think of driving if something dropped in there.

Oh, I thought you had found the fill plug (see image in my post above) secured using a nut and washer on the inside of the case.

I didn't think the stock covers had either a drain or fill plug. You just drained it by pulling the cover off and filled using the plug near the pinion flange.

i cant imagine anyone making one that has a nut on the inside that isnt welded to the cover. just doesnt make sense.
why im thinking it broke off. or could have been someone elses fix to a stripped plug then filled through the vent.
