What happens if the parking brake strut gets put in backwards? More so upside down than backwards? Would this cause the shoes to hold really tight against the backing plate? Cause the brakes to drag badly?

It certainly could. The notch is wider on one side to accomodate the e-brake lever on the primary (rear) shoe. The strut could keep the e-brake lever from retracting fully.

I think the slot was on the right side but the strut was upside down. The shop had my truck and and mentioned the one shoe was into the rivets. I told him to throw a pair in while it was apart and a week later the driver side drum got so hot it smelled like it was melting. I rebuilt the brakes and problem solved. I'm not 100% sure what the issue was really.

Keep an eye on the wheel bearing and seal on that side. Sounds like they were subjected to a lot of heat.
