What's a decent price for the following rear-end related parts/work:
  • two new axles
  • all new bearings and seals
  • Eaton/Detroit TruTrac

Took my rig to the transmission shop earlier this week to get a noise diagnosed. Turns out it was my truck's rear end singing (bearings had pitted the axle surface).

Side note, I had the G80 ratcheting diff factory and didn't know it. LOL Nothing was mechanically wrong with it, but after reading all the horror stories of "gov-bomb explosions" and all the good things regarding the TruTrac... Figured now was the best time to get all the work done since it was already apart... just curious what is considered "reasonable" for the parts and labor on such an endeavor...

Nice find!!!
I'll still run the factory gear set after all is said and done at the shop, but will have a Detroit TruTrac and new axles. Shop quoted me $505 for just the TruTrac (includes warranty). I showed them the price Summit has for the TruTrac ($420)... shop owner explained that in order to provide warranty, he'd have to purchase/sell me the one he has. I know some of that is just a way to make some extra money, but I also understand that I don't have to deal with the hassle if/when something goes awry.

If I had the tools and knowledge to do this myself, I KNOW I could have saved a grip of money, but I don't...so better to let the experts handle it.
