Ive read a lot about the rear end clunks in this forum and i am a victim of the same thing. I have been debating on a rebuild since i do a lot of towing and mountain driving. I dont really want to swap to the 14 bolt but i would like some recomendations on how some people have redone there 10 bolt. Mainly where you got your parts and what your using. I cant seem to find any good sites concerning what gears to buy and places that sell them. Thanks

The rear end clunk you feel might also be coming from your driveshaft, i'm not ruling out your differential but a common problem is the lack of oil to lubricate the splines on the driveshaft. Often this can be fixed by lightly greasing the splines. If your planning on rebuilding the diff. the weakest link is the stock carrier which can be upgraded w/ a few different types of posi-trac carriers, my favorite would be the Trutrac. Gears will be factored by not only driving habits like your towing, but what size tires your running. Some good sites for carriers, gears, and rebuild kits would be

The Clunk...

Hey guys...
My 99 makes the clunk sound whenever I take off, but after that nothing. But if i take off slowly there is no clank?? The u joints feel tight, so could this be a rear end issue?
Thanks...

I had already checked my ujoints and greased my splines with no luck. When i put it on a lift i can turn the rear wheels a little without the driveshaft turning to i figured id move on to the diff. Im running 285/75/16 tires and tow quite often so i figured it wouldnt be bad to do. Any recommendations on gearing btw?

You'll need a new gasket and some good old 80-90 gear oil.

Chock the front wheels. Chock them again. Jack both rear wheels off the ground. Pull the cover off the rear diff. Check the oil for pieces of metal, and look at how glittery it is. Glitter is very, very bad. The Hoe is a man truck, and abhors anything not manly, especially glitter. You should have a magnet on your cover, check it for more glitter, and/or pieces of gear teeth. Again, glitter is bad.

Spin one wheel until the carrier is open, and you can see the spider gears in the middle. They're the first thing to go. If you can see damage, you need to get to a rear end shop really, really soon. Bend over, because the rear end shop is going to put it in your rear end in a very glittery sort of way. Glitter is bad.

If your rear end has no glitter, and supposing your Hoe is a 4x4, you might also check for play in your transfer case. But since you say that with the drive shaft locked, you have a good amount of rotation in your wheels, I'd go for the rear diff first. This rear end was never meant for towing, or doing anything cool. They made an effort, but fell way short. If you're towing, you need to gut your diff, and go with a detroit product. Eaton made the glittery gov-lock, and for that I hold them eternally responsible. Stupid glitter.
