i was driving home about an hour ago and i was going around the corner and as i gave it some gas i heard a loud clanging from under the car, i got out and looked and didnt see anything wrong so i proceeded along carefully and it ust made an awful noise and it sounds like its coming from the rear end, i have a 99 tahoe with a 6 in lift and 35's with what i think is a stock 10 bolt, so my question is... what should i do? i have alot of experience workingon cars but ive never dealt with an issue like this

check your u joints if your pinion angle is off a hair and going around a corner and gassin it may have just toasted it... also you will probably feel if the ring and pinion are shelled if you jack up the back put it in nuetral(chock the wheels of coarse) and rotate the drive shaft by hand or spin the wheels slowly by hand... that will get you pointed in the right direction hopefully!

ok ill try that as soon as i can, i prolly wont be able to for a few days because of my work schedule, i left out that i couldnt go faster than 5 mph without it making a really loud clanging but it still did it the whole 1/2 mile home i had to go, my friend thinks it has something to do with my spider gears but he only heard the noise through the phone

did you gear the truck ever or is it the stock gears? do you have the G80 option listed in the glove box? check that for us.

In the mean time you may want to pull the cover off the differential and check things out, it should be obvious if there is a problem.

Could be lots of things ... probably not the spider gears. If those break your axles could come out ...

You could still have the G80 even though you got stuck... they've been known to go out in a couple of different ways:
  1. not lock-up at all - acting as an open diff
  2. grenade/explode - possibly taking the rear and/or tranny out with it.

I recently had my rear end rebuilt (bearing noise)... now I've got new:
  • Yukon axles
  • bearings
  • seals
  • Detroit Truetrac (replacing the G80 which was still functional AFAIK)
I look at it as insurance against a known possibility. Not the cheapest route monetarily, but far cheaper than having the G80 grenade possibly taking out the gears and tranny. I have 270k on my rig, and figured "might as well" and "now is the best time" since it was already apart. I'm very happy with my decision.
