Rear hatch, can it be opened without power?

So I found a truck at the junkyard with tail light guards on them that I wanted to sell on here, but the hatch is locked and I can't get them off.

I've never messed with a tailgate/hatch. Does the key have to be in the ignition to pop it open? I think I can rig a battery to open it tomorrow, but I just wanted to check.

I don't think there is a way to open it without a battery hooked up. I tried taking off the inside panel on the tail gate, but that wasn't working lol.

based on a '96 unit the tailgate hatch can be opened if a battery is installed, cig lighter fuse installed and tranny switch in park or nuetral. or remove the kinck panel on left and look for a connector with black and yellow wires on the same connector. battery to black, yellow to ground. that should be a direct line to latch in back.

I think it was a 95. I was surprised to see there was no inside handle for it. Stupid.

I'll just jump the power wires, thanks.

those aren't normal they look to me custom made. the parts tag like that usually goes on from custom manufacturing companies like machine shops and the like. should bead blast and powder coat. good find. wish they were made for barn door setups.

Did it wreck the paint on the hoe? Mine has rubber on it so it doesnt rub with the oaint job. If so you mihw anna do something to prevent paint to get rubbed

Yes they looked like the rubbed the tailgate a little. Some grinding and thick paint would make them work just fine. They don't have a mount on the side of the truck, I might try welding a piece on them so they fit better. The guy put velcro on them to hold it to the side of the truck.

Interesting to know they were probably custom made. They are a lot more beefy than the others I see for sale.

If the cross bars were made with 1/4" rod they might fit a barn door truck. They work fine on mine until I pull the door catch to open the doors all the way.
