Rear Hatch Lock

2 times now after opening my rear hatch it would not close because the latch would not engage. Dealer quoted me a price of $450 for a new latch and lock asembly. Has anyone else had this problem?

Need a bit more information. Is this an electric lock assembly? Has the vehicle been wrecked involving this area or has it been broken into via the rear hatch? Has anything been caught in the latch mechanism or the hatch slammed onto anything? These almost never go bad unless something has had an influence upon it, also what year, make and model?
