I think removal will be more complicated than you think. The awning serves as an air deflector and houses the hi mount/third brake light. Depending upon your state, you may not pass a safety inspection without it the hi mount/third brake light.

Joe maybe you didn’t read all the reasons some of us have posted as to why the rear wipers might scratch glass, which as you see is your original question. Upkeep isn’t the problem, it’s the fact the thing is in the back where it’s not noticed or used often, so if a bunch of dried on dirt or road crap gets on the glass ( like the op was talking about on his crappy dirt roads) and the wiper is inadvertently turned on without fluid behind dispensed , it can scratch the glass. With a new wiper and full washer fluid. There’s your rational answer. Again.

I like the look of the lip and a rear wiper. I don't understand why a person would remove it. I really am glad my Yukon has one. Without it I wouldn't have bought it.

I have never had the rear wiper scratch the glass. Not really a concern. Plus to pass safety specifications not sure if it would be ok to do. I don't see how it Look bad or "cleans" the profile. That is what the lip is for. Almost like shaving door handles and chopping the roof. Lol. Then again it would be something else if a person did that. Basically I drive mine through all seasons. I use my rear wiper occasionally and never had it scratch the glass. I would guess I think it is from not using it for over a year then use it once in dry weather. I always check my wipers when I clean my SUV and they work great. Plus I always replace wipers all wipers every 6 months
