Hello, my 2002 GMC Yukon XL Denali has some spots were the clear coat has been oxidized or otherwise damaged. There are large spots on the hood and smaller ones on the top of the doors and in front of the sun roof. I am planning on repainting the hood because of other spots of chipped paint and rust but want to avoid painting everything else. Is there an easy way to repair this? I have already tried wax and rubbing compound with no avail. I will add pictures tonight. Thanks for any suggestions.

Wax and rubbing compound will not doing anything for that unfortunately. You can try using a high speed buffer but with that it has prob gone through the clear coat. So only way to fix is sand down and reclear or repaint.

There is no easy way. Your going to have to sand, prime, paint/blend, and re-clear. The hood and top are going to be fairly easy, the top of the doors will have to be blended down into the pillars. How is the rest of the body paint wise? and body damage? you might want to think about a re-spray. if the body is in real good shape, you can use the paint that is there and block sand the clear off and use the black as a filler. Then prime, sand, and then paint.

Would it be possible to sand down to the base coat and just respray the clear? I have heard of people sanding base coats before clearing before but I don't know if that would work in this case? Also the rest of the paint isn't terrible but there are a few dents. Thinking of either coughing up the cash for paintless dent repair or cheaping out and filling in the dents and blending the fixed sections. How much does a complete respray run on a XL if I use a body shop?

Think a good repaint is 2-3K

Forgive me for bumping into this thread. However, I'm suffering similar issues on my '02 Hoe. You're saying that $3k would be for a whole new paint job on the entire truck? Or just the areas that OP has effected (which are the same as mine)? Thanks!
