I have had three replacement keys cut on Hillman B96 blanks. They work in the door, but not in the ignition.

This ride was purchased used, and apparently has an aftermarket security system in it. Are there any of those out that that would cause the ignition to not even turn, as opposed to locking out the fuel supply?

I know that this is not supposed to be a 'chipped' key.

Do you have the original key or did they sell it to you with an aftermarket key?

Key

It appears to be a factory key. It's got the plastic head with the "GMC" on it. It does not have the "PK3" imprint that would indicate a 'chipped' key.

Are these keys being cut at the dealer? They tend to like the ones that are cut from the dealer. Only 10 bucks here where I am at to get on. Aftermarket was a no go.

The key wont turn in the ignition? But the original one does?

Sounds like the key was cut wrong or referenced from a pretty worn key. First take one of the new keys and see how close the profile is to the original key. If it's close, you can take it to a bench grinder with a wire brush wheel and soften the edges and see if that works. This is because the springs in the lock cylinder wear out so with a worn ignition lock cylinder, a key cut too sharp may not work anymore. Otherwise, have the dealer cut a new code from the VIN and see if that works. Otherwise you probably have to pull the ignition lock cylinder out along with a new dealer cut key (vin) and take them to a locksmith to rebuild the lock cylinder (replace the springs and reset the pins).

Worn Key

The potential for a worn key is pretty high, given that it's a 14 year old vehicle with 130k on it.

I took some 220 grit paper to one of the keys and it worked better in the door, but would not work in the ignition. I'll try to do a little more detailed job with it and see if that helps.

Thanks.
