I have an 01' Suburban and I need to get the front wheel bearings replaced. I was told that they are sealed wheel bearing hubs and they are not that hard to do. I checked in my Haynes manual and the section on them is very very short and extremely vague. Any help/pics would be great as money is short right now. I was going to pay a mechanic to do it. He told me he charges me the same price that he gets his parts plus labor...well I found out that he marked the parts up with a 25% margin...I will learn to do it myself before I pay him an extra $80.

If you know how to change your brakes and rotor you're about 95% there.
All you need is the big socket for the center shaft nut. I think 3 or 4 nuts hold the bearing defending on model.

Anyone know the size of that nut? I watched a couple videos on the you tube so I am pretty confident I can save myself a bundle by doing this myself.

Now I have never done brakes before but my buddy told me that all I need to do is take some fluid out of the brake fluid container and press the pistons back, remove the caliper, remove the rotor, then take the three bolts out of the hub and swap it out for a new one.

If your truck is RWD you wont have that center nut, and if so your buddy was dead on, you have to remove the two caliper bolts( top and bottom) then I took like a screw driver or pry bar open your bleeder screw and push the calipers in then just pull of the caliper then off comes the rotor, remove the 3 bolts from behind and unhook the abs connector and just install new, should only take a couple hours to do both sides

Shoot. You don't have to open a bleeder nor remove fluid from the master on brakes.

Just push the piston back... If you never added fluid (and you really should never have to) then it won't overflow.

RWD it is, I am so glad I actually looked into this. By doing it myself i will be saving $190 compared to the quote I was given.
Thanks for the help I will be back if I run into a snag, but this seems like a cake walk.

I went to the parts store after work to get some. i checked the other day and they had 2 in stock. Went back today and they only had one :( maybe tomorrow I will get them done.

Since I haven't bought any yet, can anyone suggest a decent one and where to get them. Or are they all pretty much the same?

They're all pretty much the same, and they run around $108.00.. I just did the passenger side on my RWD Tahoe. Do yourself a favor and allow a lot more time then you think it's actually gonna take to do the job. Mine was so rusted in it took an oxyacetylene torch, a slide hammer and a 20lb sledge to get mine off once all the bolts were out... And that was with about 60-80 minutes of heating and hitting..
