He most likely has a different gear ratio in his rearend than you do.

If I had to guess he probably has a 3.42 or 3.08 and you may have a 3.73 like me.

Of course mine is a 08 Suburban so I have the 4 speed transmission as well but mine with cruise set at 73 MPH turns about 2000-2100 RPM and netted about 17.5 MPG on my last interstate trip.

My truck has a K&N filter and Air raid MIT and a free flowing muffler and has a custom Diablew tune via the Diablo sport I2. Just for reference.

Also I average around 15 MPG in town.
I recently found out via rpo that I have 3.42 gears.

What's the thought on switching the stock air intake for an aftermarket? The stock is already a cold air intake. The only benefit I can see for switching is reducing the sharp angels of the stock intake system.

The stock ‘tube’ is designed for sound reduction and a pretty good air flow but yes swapping intake tubes will improve airflow and which will net some hp gains. Sounds better, goes faster.. win, win

You really have to watch the instant mileage and adjust your foot to get good mileage.
If I drive normal speed to work, 80-85 mph and get heavy on the pedal I only get 16 or so.
If I wake up early enough for work next week ie. 3:10 instead of 3:30 am I will try doing just the speed limit of 55 and 65 mph and see what the mileage is.

Exactly.... that's why I went with a drop in filter and the MIT which is just the tube between air box and TB. It gets rid of the mufflers/resonance chambers on the stock tube along with the accordion style rubber connector. I also opened up the side of the air box where it meets the fender and the fender but it's all still within the factory sealed area.

What year is your truck?

Wow, $155+ for the MIT. That sounds like a really good alternative to a full intake system though. What did you notice, if anything, just with the intake mods? I need a new rear bumper cover so I'm trying to decide if I want to replace it with stock or go with an Escalade dual exhaust model for when I upgrade the exhaust system.

Mine is a 2009 LTZ.

Honestly, I didn't notice a big difference but I wasn't really expecting much. A couple HP, if that, on a Suburban is undecernable.

So 2009 yours is a 6 speed and with 3.42 gears you should get pretty decent MPG on the interstate as long as your not running 90 MPH... lol

These trucks are big bricks and don't exactly slice through the air like a Corvette.

On the way from Seattle to Denver I averaged 15.4 mpg with two adults and three kids. I was running 75-85 mph the entire time though. The speed limit though Northern Utah is 80 mph, sooo got to do a little over to make up time from all the damn bathroom breaks lol.

Last summer we went from Seattle to Long Beach, WA and got 18.2 round trip, average speed was like 50 cause its single lane highways. My buddy in his 2016 Tahoe got 18.8. Not much of a difference at all, I was actually really surprised.

I am quite familiar with the 80 MPH speed limit in Utah.... I used to stroll through there in my big blue Pete!!!... lol
