So I have been looking at a 2006 Yukon XL Denali with 99,000 miles. Lots of the updates I am looking for have been completed to include new tires. Everything is great but some rust under the back door. No rust anywhere else. I would like to clean it up and see what happens but everywhere I go I see people saying stay away from the rust.

Sometimes in Michigan, especially where I live our vehicles are unfortunately going to get rusty no matter what.

Here is a picture of the rust.

Not sure what to do.87ee98c3380ad3866c0c20ad9b43c66e.jpg

Don't but it unless your ok with big gaping Rust holes. There are probably going to be others that follow the rockers. Most likely the rear quarter panels. Oh and possibly rusted out brake lines. And don't forget fuel lines. Oh and emergency brake cables too... Annnnd seized up spare tire hoist that makes using your spare tire impossible unless you cut it out with a hack saw. Then there is frame rust.

If I were you I'd stay far far away. But that's just me. I take good care of my Tahoe and as of late, when one rust issue pops up there are many many more to follow.

99k on a 2006 is super low. Bummer that it has rust. But rust is a thing in Michigan. It can be handled at a good body shop depending on how deep it’s spread. If that one little spot is the only rust spot on the truck I wouldn’t be scared off by that. I would however do a solid undercarriage inspection to ensure that nothing is rusted out on the underside. As he said^ brake lines are known to be prey to rust. However they can easily be replaced with the steel braided lines for not too horribly expensive and those steel braided brake lines will last longer than the truck itself. So if you were to buy this truck, fixing the rusty spot and repacking brake lines with steel braided would be a perfect investment into the life of the truck!

The rockers look like they are shot on both sides. You are only seeing 10% of it. Get an estimate from a body shop before buying. If it’s only $4000 to fix, might be worth it depending on what the asking price is. What does interior look like?

One of the reasons I was looking at it was because of the updates on the vehicle and new tires. I was going to offer $7500.

Front differential-
Brakes/rotors/calipers-
Both front wheel bearings-
New OEM Goodyear tires-
Radiator-
Front brake line-
Rear air shocks and compressor-
Front shocks-

You will likely find more rust behind those body trim panels. I would suspect the dog leg between the rear doors and the rear wheel wells. Also behind the rear wheel wells. It is likely that The inner rockers are rotted ahead of the rear wheels too. Also look at lower door seams and the lift gate seam.

These vehicles may live on mechanically forever, but in the rust belt the body will fall off around them. The bad part is fixing mechanical issues is often much easier than fixing corrosion issues.

Do some Craigslisting in the south and when spring break rolls around convince the wife to go to the beach, while you're there pick up a rust free suburban [emoji106].
