is this a common issue? Trying to get it covered under the 6 year rust warranty and being told that this is normal per my local GM dealer. Thoughts ? Are the weather strips around the actual door frame on the passenger and driver side easily replaceable?

Easy , just replace the weather strip. That rust is metal inside the weather strip is used to hold it in place.
I'll be doing my drivers door soon.
