Hi new guy here, just picked up a 2000 Tahoe 77k miles really clean, had it about a week and a half and love it so far. I have a few questions but the most important at the moment is my Service 4WD message has lit up a few times on me while driving and then goes off next time the truck is started. There are no other problems and the 2WD light on the 4WD selector switch stays lit. I have read some old posts that say it is a problem with the selector switch on the dash and its easy to replace but nothing detailing how to. I found the switch for cheap at LMC and ebay, etc... but I have also read it could be the control module behind the dash but have not been able to find where to get this and how to replace it. Any ideas on which it most likely is and is there a how to on pulling the dash apart? It looks like the front panel is a snap on, if so do I just pop that off to gain access? Is there a way to check if this is the problem?

first off Welcome to TYF! :)
secondly, the dash bezel will just pop off
lower your steering wheel turn the key and lower the shifter into 1st
I always start at the bottom right corner where there is a little slot to pry at then just pull out

from there you'll see how to get the 4WD selector switch out.. I want to say everything behind the dash is a 7mm socket but I'm lacking sleep so it might not

mine says service 4wd as well and I've never understood why because I can put it in Auto 4wd and it works fine

also just a hint if the red N light comes on the selector switch and it won't stay in 2wd, start the car put it in neutral and select what you want.. wait until it engages then throw it back into park

Welcome,

I was having the same problem with my 01 yukon. I also read where it was probably the selector switch. My guess is you probably have the same issue. Took me 10-15 minutes to replace it back in March. Took that long because I'm mechanically challenged. It's been 6 months and the light has not come back on since.

Ok thanks for the replies, it actually came on twice on me today so I ordered up a new selector switch and will swap it in as soon as it shows up. Hopefully that will do it cause its kind of annoying haveing a big red light on my dash.
