What is the difference between my AWD system and a 4WD system that has a Auto AWD button?

Well I tried my 4 high and 4 low and they both engaged and in neutral 4 low worked I could feel it engaged in drive. So I wonder why I had service 4wd one day and is working fine now? I have been driving in 2wd instead of auto aswell
