So today I was under the influence of a friend with a Hummer and decided to follow in his tracks through a 2 ft deep puddle. I was hammering on it pretty hard and having fun but after about an hour of messing around I hit the highway and ran into a problem . First off, the "service engine soon" light came on. Not sure why other than maybe from moisture. Also, and more importantly, I had trouble shifting. The rig would keep jumping around from gear to gear every 2 seconds or so. This went on for a good 5 minutes. I powered through it and now my ride is running fine again but I am curious what this could have been. General knowledge makes me think it was some sort of sensor acting up due to moisture but thought I would see what the forum has to say. Thoughts?

More than likely it was electrical. It would be worth the time and trouble to get to the carwash and get everything cleaned very well and then watch for other problems. I take it that you are not equipped with a skid pan as the Hummer is, and that other areas are not protected as well. I hope you got it out of your system. Of course you didn't advise the type of vehicle you are driving so I can't be more specific.

Sorry, '01 Yukon 5.6L. Going to clean out the engine bay today. Also, I had a squeel coming from the belt and now it is alot louder. Not sure if it needs replacing or tightening or if it is coming from something else like the alternator.

Just simple greened the engine and cleaned it out with a lightweight pressure washier (one of those crappy electric ones). Put plastic bags over the alternator and K&N. Let it dry out with fans on it for about 3 hours and then fired it up. Seemed to have gotten rid of the squeel and it sounds better than before I rallied it. Good to go.

I know that the allison trans on the GM HD trucks have a module that bolts to the shift lever. This module isn't very water tight and will cause shifting issues almost identical to yours. I wonder if your trans has a similar module on the trans?
