From time to time I poke around and look at things based on snippets that I read here on the forum. Let me just preface this by saying the truck runs fine. But I saw this on the distributor and I'm sure somebody here can tell me why it's there and what if anything I should do about it when the opportunity presents itself. It's the zip tie that concerns me in case that isn't obvious. It's really the first jury-rigged thing I've found on the truck btw.

Plastic distributor housing -check

Broken cap mounting tab - check

Not that I condone it but its probably the best way to fix it without buying a new distributor.

So the problem is the housing, not the cap. Damn. And they want a lot of money for the complete distributor. I guess it stays the way it is for awhile.

Haha the batteries in the flashlight are actually better than it appears. I do have an LED maglight that's a lot brighter but this one was closest.

Do not - repeat - do not mess with the distributor unless you're willing to pay the extra $80 to $150 for the local shop to re-teach your truck the new timing (requires a special diagnostic tool). If not, you'll be chasing P1345 and P0300 codes until the real rapture.

I thought the timing on the 96+ Vortec was computer controlled... As in, set the #1 cylinder to DTC, point the rotor to the #1 pin and the rest is "adjusted" electronically.
