I know this has been discussed many times with plenty of threads explaining the correct procedure on how to lower it down and what to do to release the secondary latching system etc .I followed every procedure explained that was on the forums , and I just want to say what a POS system this is! Gm really dropped the ball on this one .In theory I guess it was a good design, but I don't think they took into account exposure to road salt , debris etc , especially in the northeastern states .Damn I dreaded messing with the spare today , but since switching to 17's , I still had the 16 spare under there and I didn't want to take a chance of getting a flat with the wrong size spare and ruining a differential because of the size difference .I think I just about destroyed the secondary system. I tried like he'll to get it to unlatch .I was able to unbolt the mechanism, still attached to the spare. Took me forever .I can't even imagine what it would be like stuck on the side of the road, in the middle of nowhere . Sux big time. IMAG0271.jpgIMAG0273.jpg

The only good thing that came out of this was I found the keyed lock that fit in the tube to lower the spare .IMAG0276.jpgIMAG0277.jpg

Been there, done that. I feel your pain. Replaced mine with a Dorman part then sprayed Fluid Film everywhere I could. It tough living in NJ where they put enough salt on the road to turn it white at the hint of snow.

Unfortunately I put everything back together and back under the truck. Hopefully it'll be a little easier next time.
