Just got my oil changed and after I got the truck back, the speedo started malfunctioning and reading the wrong speed. Now when the truck is stopped, The needle is at 25mph and moves up from there as I increase speed. This is an issue that has been getting worse and worse and seems to happen after they reset my computer after an oil change. I can't imagine that the shop did anything wrong and the problem did go away before but has never been this bad.

They told me all of the sensors were reading correctly and that it must be in the cluster. When I called the dealer it seemed like a common problem but of course it will cost me a benjamin for them to look at it.

Any ideas?

Id be willing to bet its a cluster issue too.... does the 03 have a DIC with steering wheel buttons to reset the oil change computer like our 05 does? or do you have to press and hold the odometer reset button? either way, im sure its in the cluster but espeically if it has to do with them pressiing and holding the odometer trip meter button, pressure in that area can certainly make bad solder joints act up. i had one in a neon that acted up and i could get the guages and speedo back by pushing in around the odometer...easy fix was to remove and "reflow" the joint... in other words i just took a heated soldering iron and touched the joints on the back side to make it remelt and make sure there were no cracks or voids....

also, alot of online places, even on ebay, there are services (not through the dealer) that can refurbish your cluster for a flat fee thats very reasonable. also, there are usually some available on ebay or even on here. mileage might be off and that would suck for resale etc but certainly cheaper than getting the stealership to fix it.

In that year you depress the gas 5 times while the key is "on" but the engine is off. So there was no reason to press on the gauge cluster reset.

Is the speed sensor on the transmission / transfer case? could domeone have tugged on a wire during the oil change and unseated a connector?

Gauge clusters are a common problem. I had to put a new one in mine. a guy off EBAY did mine for something like $300 bucks. It sounds expensive, but I had them add the tranny temp gauge, so it was worth it to me. The replacement gauge cluster was perfect when I got it, it looked brand new. I can get you his info if youre interested.

each time I start the truck it seems that the needle drops a bit. It was 12 miles off this last time I drove home from the GFs house. Alost make me think it had something to do with resetting to the correct rear end gear ratio :)

My 04 has had this problem a few times. Ive found that when I start the truck the speedo tries to reset to zero and would get a little closer each time i started it, i just did this the appropriate number of times and it was back to zero. It hasn't acted up in a while knock on wood. Try that. I think this is a common issue though.

Yeah that is what I'm thinking. I'm not going to throw $500 at this problem right now

guess just chalk it up to typical GM random issues hahaha. just cycle it enough times i guess and it'll return to zero. thats kinda funny...."uh officer, sorry, my speedometer was off, i havent started my truck enough times for it to be right".
