Sporadic Oil change light

Had an oil change a couple thousand miles ago. I reset the light. Now my change engine oil light comes on when I start the vehicle and then goes off after about 30 seconds or so. Is this how it's supposed to work or is it supposed to stay on?
Also, what triggers the light.....is the PCM smart enough to detect dirty oil or is it based on mileage?

The Oil light is triggered by a timer and not by an oil viscosity or oil cleanliness. So there must be something shorting out within your system, how is your system set up? Does it say like 87% left until oil change or does it show up by a light that says Oil?
