Next time, before you have a shop pull codes.. take it to an AutoZone or Oreilly's (or whatever auto parts place you have) and have them pull the codes first. They'll print out whatever they find, and leave it up to you to decide what to do with it. They really don't have any reason to lie to you other than to sell you parts, and my experiences with them have been pretty good with that so far. Hell, yesterday I saw an AutoZone employee with a Chilton's manual out showing a guy where a part was.. and how to replace it.
IMO, shops can "say" they pulled codes and tell you whatever they want. And if the techs working there aren't good at troubleshooting, they're just going to start replacing parts until the problem goes away. I found this out the hard way 10 years ago, which is why unless it's on fire, or spewing gas outta the top of the fuc#ing engine I do not take it to a shop. I research (like here on TYF), Google search, and I try to fix it myself.
Mechanically enclined or not, you'll do well to train yourself to do the basics.
