I really wish I had a better way to describe this noise, but I will give it a shot and maybe someone will recognize the issue...

This noise is kind of like a whirring or possibly a vibration, but doesn't appear to be a rattling / heat shield type of noise. It is not loud enough to capture with video (well maybe), but loud enough that I can hear it with the radio on a regular level.

This happens between 40 and 55 mph and only when the torque converter is locked...or appears to be locked and slight pedal is applied. Enough to speed up, but not enough to downshift. If I go through this speed in a lower gear, it does not make the noise. If it starts to make the noise and I press the pedal a little harder, it will downshift and the noise disappears. It usually happens when driving on roads with speed limits in the range just from speeding up and slowing down to match traffic. But can also happen on light acceleration when it locks up the converter in this range and I am still accelerating.

Also, there is a slight and faint whine type of noise when decelerating through this same speed range. It is not very noticeable, but I have realized that it has only been making the noise as long as the acceleration noise has been present.

Both issues seem to slowly be getting worse.

I should also point out that the first problem is also present when not actually accelerating...IE: going up a slight hill in this speed range and needing to give it just a bit of throttle to hold my speed.

Any/all help is appreciated!

Any luck?

While I have a 1995, and am a bit out of place posting on this, I found this post searching for key words that describe my problem. My problem sounds to be very similar to yours and I wanted to see if you found out what it is.

First, does yours have a locker / posi? I couldn't find your specs sorry.
Also, did you ever "feel" anything from you're problem? I have noticed a distinctive (but very, very subtle) feeling through the floorboard / gas pedal.

I'll likely be starting a thread on my problem in a few days, if I can't find some ideas through searching, and describe my problem in as much detail as I can... but my thoughts are transfer case, u joint (itself or) / drive shaft (imbalance?), replacing the oil in my diff and inspecting gears etc (next weekend, pending Redline's delivery)... or ????

Let me know if you found out what yours was.

I have checked everything I can possibly think of and had a mechanic inspect what I did not know how to and I have no answer. It has not gotten worse and has not seemed to cause any issues. My best guess is some sort of heat shield rattle that happens within that particular rpm range or load.

Good luck!

Sounds like carrier bearing based on other posts through the yrs. Search for carrier bearing, spanner lock tabs, and you should get many threads on the topic and see if what is described is similar to yours. I am going off my failing memory here but this seems familiar. Good luck

Really sorry to hear you're still dealing with it. If you're like me, I can't hear anything BUT this "whine" knowing it's there...

Thanks Bob, that brought up a ton of articles for me to read through. Appreciate the suggestion!
