Well, I've had the underbody plastic sheild off my Tahoe several times now. Seems as though they were in an incredible hurry at the factory--for someone over-torqued one of the plastic shield front upper bolts. It's pretty obvious when you take the bolt out. The hole where the bolt threads into is nearly striped. It is only holding by a few threads and I can't tighten it up.
It is a large bolt that self threads into the front most circular crossmember--I believe it takes a 15mm socket--the four on the bottom are much smaller and take a 12mm socket.
Being that there is a reason to remove this often (front diff, suspension, motor, etc...), any ideas on how to repair this? I'm not sure I can get a drill up there at the proper angle? And if I could, would a nut-cert or other thread repair have enough to bite onto? I don't have a welder to add metal back.
Any ideas? I would eventually like to add the aluminum skid plates for piece of mind, so it will become important eventually. Plus not putting a bolt through anyone's tire is a bonus!
